IR Consultant Pricing Survey - U.S.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get from our students and readers is "How much do consultants charge for IR inspection services?"

This groundbreaking survey provides you with the answers. The results of this survey should prove invaluable to you for both pricing and marketing your services.

We will be updating this information with a new survey to be conducted later this year. The results will be published as part of the InfraMation 2018 Conference Proceedings which all attendees receive.

If you want to be included in the survey, make sure that you opt in to "ITC email" on the Online Training registration page or your profile (for current online learners). Participants will be able to purchase the published report at a 50% discount.

Errors & Omissions Liability Insurance

Error and Omissions Liability Insurance is a topic that has come up repeatedly in our message boards through the years. I have consolidated the most relevant information from all or our posts here for convenience. Hope this is useful.

We found a reasonable policy through this agent:
Elsa Escobar
Commercial Lines Underwriter
Costanza Insurance Agency, Inc.
e.escobar@cia-ca.com
800.300.9775 x12
It took her some time but she says it would be much easier now that she's researched it once. Send her an email and add "Thermography insurance referral" on the subject line.
We ended up purchasing a General Liability Policy with 3M coverage, and added a Marine Policy to cover the camera. (The Marine Policy) is also used for contractor's Tools, and anything movable. Your best bet appears to be with and Independent Insurance company who has access to a wide variety of companies to draw from.

Marketing your infrared thermography services

This is an increasingly common request these days. As the prices of infrared cameras has dropped dramatically in the past few years, more and more independent consultants have been purchasing them. These users don't have large corporations and big marketing budgets to promote themselves.
"I love being a thermographer and would appreciate any suggestions you may have on how I can develop more effective ways to build my business?"

So you have to come up with smart low cost ways of getting noticed, and getting business. Here are a few suggestions:

Speak at local trade associations meetings. They are always looking for speakers. Some examples:
Call up or email local TV stations with interesting images or video you have taken with your IR camera. Examples:
  • Current news events - Forest fire, Search for lost child
  • Consumer concerns - Heating or A/C costs, Mold in schools
Build a web site and make sure search engines can find it

Find messageboards and blogs and contribute to them

Use social networking media like Linked In and Facebook to network

Search Business and Manufacturers Guides for potential clients
  • Shopping Centers
  • Office complexes
  • Warehouses
  • Supermarkets
  • Manufacturing Facilities
Here is an example of an online directory, Directories USA. You could search for parameters that could point to a good prospect such as:
  • Number of employees
  • Facilities Square footage
  • Electrical Useage
  • What they make
  • Plant Manager contacts
Put a video up on YouTube
